Weekly update from our Group Editor Duncan J White
Tomorrow will be a good day
Since commencing his weekly updates at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic Duncan has seen a steady rise in the number of personal messages of support and comments welcoming his weekly communications.
An extension to the lockdown period here in the UK should have come as no surprise to the majority of us and seems the most sensible approach as we watch on daily basis the figures in relation to tests, infections and deaths. There is now a definite slowing of the death rate and it would appear that we have passed the peak; however we can’t be complacent and must remain committed to seeing through the current restrictions if we want to put an end to this issue in a timely manner.
It is encouraging to see parts of the world returning to some semblance of normality, albeit with tentative steps. We must watch and continually learn from each other to ensure we adjust plans based on evidence from others – now is not the time for maverick actions but for us all to come together as one with a common goal of ‘beating the invisible killer’.
In times of adversity there often appears a symbol of determination and courage, Captain Tom Moore has certainly taken up this role in the face of the global crisis we are battling. At 99 years old he has demonstrated all that is good about humanity and delivered on his promise of completing 100 laps of his garden to raise money for NHS Charities, despite having had a hip replacement! His goal to raise £1000 was achieved with minutes of his appearance on the BBC and his total is currently over £27 million. He has been embraced by the world and we need to work with all our might to maintain this new found global togetherness once we have tamed and controlled COVID-19 – because, in the words of Captain Tom, ‘Tomorrow will be a good day’.
